Style Moodboard- graduation project

As a start I did some research on animations and illustration styles I liked. I was very uncertain if I wanted to do something 2D illustrative, or if I wanted to go for something more graphic, potentially mixing 2d and 3d and challenge myself with a new software.

I especially loved the work of Merlin Fluegel, who works in muted colours and a simplified 2D animation style. His last work rules of play can be seen via the link.

I first thought about doing something in black and white, muted colours as I wanted to create something that also was in line with the music producer I do the video for.

The benefits of using a very sleek, graphic black and white style would be that I could use a 3D software for some scenes, and therefore safe some time.

I have shared this before, a music video by Geriko film. A mixture of 2D and 3D. I love how detailed and picture perfect every frame of this video is.

I also thought about the use of colour. I usually tend to work in muted colours, or don’t use colour at all, but it could be a benefit for moving image. I really like a very pattern like image, contrasting colours.

I really liked the music video to Mr. Fear by Siames, created by Rudocompany, as they used framed animated sequences.

The colours are bright yet more pastel.

Examples of using colour, but only a selection of two or three which makes the animation very graphic again.

I absolutely fell in love  with the work of Alice Saey, a french animator who works with very vibrant colours, high contrast. She often uses loops and her work often appears to be like a pattern.

I also like the work of Nicolas Menard, who works with bright colours. His Film Somewhere uses bright simplified imagery, and is in general more slow paced. Through the use of the colours the images remind of pattern.
